LEARN MORE ABOUT STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION

About

Structural Integration, also known as Rolfing, was created by Dr. Ida P. Rolf in the mid-20th century. Dr. Rolf received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Physiology from Columbia University, and researched Organic Chemistry and Chemotherapy at the Rockefeller Institute. Because of her background as a Biochemist, Dr. Rolf gained a very unique perspective on the human body.

Introduced to holistic health practices at an early age, she began studying the myofascial tissues of the body and their relationship to gravity, as well as the impact of this relationship on one’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. She found that by manually manipulating and organizing the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and permeates the vast majority of the human body, impaired areas began to heal, find alignment, and resume proper functioning.

“This is the gospel of Structural Integration: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."

FAQs

  • If it has to do with the musculoskeletal and/or myofascial system, chances are very high that we can help.

Common treated issues include: headaches, scoliosis, disc issues, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, TMJ dysfunction, Osgood-Schlatter disease, low back issues, postural discomfort, etc.

  • Structural Integration requires the client to be clothed and actively engaged in the session.

Practitioners are trained in understanding the fascial planes and their directions within the body, and the intention of the work is objective-focused rather than experience-focused.

Sessions are systematically ordered and build upon one another, while still keeping the client’s specific needs in mind.

The goal is to effect change in the myofascial system by re-aligning tissues and freeing restrictions, thus leading to vertical and horizontal balance throughout the whole body. Because of this, the work can be uncomfortable at times, but also leads to more profound and lasting effects.

  • Structural Integration and Rolfing have the same foundational work, however, some operate under the Rolfing trademark based on their institute of education.

  • Infants require special attention in their head, neck, mouths, etc following birth. We do advanced, gentle, and effective manipulations in these areas, as well as throughout the entire body, to release restrictions and encourage proper growth & development.

  • For men, work is best achieved with loose fitting/flexible shorts.

For women, work is best achieved with a flexible sports bra and loose fitting/flexible shorts.
